Pillowcase Challenge giveaway!
30 April 2009, 13:18Cast your mind back to May last year, when I posted about sending off some submitted projects for a book about reusing old pillowcases… You there yet? Great!
Because Craft Challenge: Dozens of Ways to Repurpose a Pillowcase has now been published! Or rather, it was a month or so ago, I’m a tad late…
I’ve got my copy here, which is full of really basic, easy sewing projects that are perfect for beginning sewers. The other cool things is that you don’t really have to use pillowcases for your starting points here – you could just as easily make things like the hat, stuffed toys, kimono (pictured above), remote control armchair caddy, cape, etc, from equivalent lengths of scrap fabric or fun quilting cottons. I sourced all my vintage pillowcases off eBay to make my samples for the book, too, so you don’t have to feel bad about cutting up your family heirlooms if you don’t want to, either.
So without further ado, here’s my winning submission, the “Flirty pyjama set”, featuring a camisole and French knickers made from one pair of pillowcases!
(Photo of the Flirty Pyjamas compliments of Lark Books!)
Now, if you own this book, you may be scratching your head right now and thinking your memory is failing you… Because my “Flirty pyjama set” is not actually in the book.
Unfortunately, after all the hard work that went into creating the instructions and the two sample sets, these had to be cut from the final printing due to space constraints, and the materials weren’t in any state to give away as a pdf for all of you, either (sorry, I tried!).
But – my contributor credit seems to have remained at the back of the book! (and I still got paid)
So I guess this still counts as being published, right?
In any case, I’ve actually got two extra copies of “Pillowcase Challenge” to give away, and to sweeten the deal, I’ll also throw in my two sample Flirty Pyjama sets and even gasp sign the book for the two winners!
I think it’d be nice to restrict this to those of you who count yourself as beginners, since it’s great for easy, straightforward projects, and my other competitions are usually for more advanced sewers. But I’m happy to post anywhere in the world, so don’t let that stop you!
So if you’d like to win a signed copy of “Pillowcase Challenge” along with a flirty pyjama set, please leave a comment below describing the current pillowcase that’s on your bed, right now.
I’ll extract out the entries (so others can feel free to comment, too) and pick two winners at random next weekend (May 9-10).
And if you don’t win, then you can still buy it on Amazon US for $14 and see my credit for yourself ha!
Update: The competition is now closed. Congratulations to Bridget and Karen!

That is awesome! I love the print on your pillowcase night set. While I don’t count myself as a beginner, I have been sticking to the easy projects these days and that book is right up my alley. If I don’t qualify for your give-away, I’ll happily buy a copy at first chance. My current pillow case is a lovely mint green egyptian cotton sateen, 400 thread count with a subtle stripe in the weave. I love the color and the cotton is so soft.

Your Flirty Pajama set looks perfect for a hot summer night especially with that cool blue contemporary look print. I am a beginner and I love sewing pillowcases since they are fast and easy. Great for a sewing fix when I don’t have much time or energy. My current pillow case is an earthy red with yellow stars, 100% quilting cotton which gets softer with every wash.

I am definitely NOT a beginner, so please, withdraw my name! But I HAD to comment on the flirty pajamas – they look like so much fun! Congrats on the book deal.

I’d love the book. My current pillowcase is boring plain white one with yellow patches where I’ve dribbled on it! It’s being changed tonight!

That is really lovely pillowcase fabric! We’re currently using some Ikea pillowcases—green vines with red, pink, and orange flowers on a white background. Too bad my boyfriend is such a heavy sleeper—I don’t think his pillowcase will ever, ever be turned into something wearable. It would probably violate some kind of health code ;)

I am totally a beginner sewist and would love a copy of the book! The pillowcases on my bed are the same ones every day — I only have one set of sheets (don’t worry they get washed every week!). They are a golden color with a slight orangey cast, very slight.

I am an advanced beginner sewer. My pillow cases are a mix of blue and green-like a watercolor picture.

I definitely count as a beginner, after reading your blog for over a year I finally got hold of an old machine and have been inspired to start sewing (I’m currently trying to make a dress). At the moment my pillow cases are dark blue with light blue spots, think 1970’s.

I love your pajamas set! It’s so sad they’re not in the book. I haven’t sewn much, but I’m picking it back up, my last project was a pillowcase! The pillowcase currently on my bed is a soft brown paisley cotton.

Ah, that would be…cream with burgundy trim and embroidery. Those pjs look like they would be lovely for the hot summer weather here. :)

It’s a shame that your ‘flirty pajamas’ didn’t get into the final of the book as they are very cute! I am not a beginner either so don’t enter me in your contest.

I LOVE the flirty pajama set! How adorable! The pillowcase on my bed is sooo sad it would probably bring tears to your eyes — or at the very least, a long groan! First of all it is an old plain white flannel case that was worn out when my son used it 20 years ago. But, alas, in my never-throw-out-something-that-is-not-totally-falling-apart “green” mode, I resurrected it and found it still has some time left before it totally disintegrates. Oh, did I mention that it fits a “regular” size pillow and mine is a “queen?” It’s only missing a couple of inches of case on the one end!Anyway, guess relatives don’t qualify for the prizes (probably wouldn’t fit me anyway), but thought I’d comment on my “vintage” pillowcase.

Yay! I saw this on amazon and thought of you…. I love your project. Way to go! By the way, my pillowcase at the moment is a King Sized green stripe.

This looks like what I need for our hot and muggy summer nights — we got up to 95F the other day!
Speaking of muggy nights… I must admit that our off-white pillow cases took the brunt of the sweat-inducing weather last summer, and are now quite off-white…

It is too bad your project didn’t get in the book but it must feel great to know you were chose. I would like to be in the drawing. On my bed right now: yellow background, red flowered cotton/poly blend pillowcases. A very good buy where I used to work. I miss my employee discount.

I’m chiming in to say that the set is SO cute and I would love to be entered in the giveaway. I myself would have to buy new pillowcases to make a truly cute set as my pillowcases are simple one-color cotton percale sets from K-mart’s old Martha Stewart collection in pale green and two shades of lavender. However, I really wish you would try (pretty-please) to create a tutorial because I’m sure everyone would love to make some too. Great job!

Speaking of pillowcases, do you know anywhere in London that sells fabric to make bedding? My sister wants to make a non-standard size duvet cover but can’t find fabric wide enough.
— thebigmango May 1, 12:28 PM #
Ohh – sorry to say I only have navy flannel pillowcases on the bed right now but I have some lovelys like the cover stored away. Which leads me to think – why aren’t they somehow in use? I just need inspiration.

The print on the pajama set is really awesome – it must have been an awesome pillowcase, but I think it’s even awesomer this way!
I’m not sure if I count as a beginner, because the pillowcase that’s on my bed right now is a quilted patchwork pillowcase, a checkerboard of white and sailory fabrics. Made by me, I forgot to mention. But it took me about three years to make it, so that might make me a big beginner. It’s this one: http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=modroblpolthotov.jpg
